SFG data are typically obtained in the macroscopic scale, and the size of the SFG specimens used for the data is large, but the size of the individual microcracks (micro-SFGs) within the specimen is very small. The size of a typical SFG specimen is in the order of a millimetre, and the size of a micro-SFG specimen is usually in the order of a micrometre. The size of a micro-SFG specimen is so small that it is not practical to measure the stress intensity factors of a large number of micro-SFG specimens simultaneously, so we are only able to obtain a single data point for each load-unload cycle instead of a single data point for each SFG specimen2,3,8,11,12,13,15,17,18,19,20,21,22,23. The stress intensity factors of the micro-SFG specimen are obtained from the average stress intensity factors from the micro-SFG specimens, and so the number of the SFG specimens (or the number of single data points) we measure is much smaller than the number of the micro-SFGs. Each micro-SFG specimen is typically measured 10–20 times, which is a large number of measurement cycles; each measurement cycle involves the loading and unloading of a small number of SFG specimens.
